Welcome to Flyfishspi.com! If you are reading this, you are looking to catch redfish on a fly in a beautiful and special part of subtropical Deep South Texas.
The Lower Laguna Madre is located at the most southern tip of Texas. Cameron and Willacy counties to the west, Gulf of Mexico to the east. South Padre Island National seashore divides the LLM from the gulf. The LLM is roughly 50miles long and 7miles across at its widest point. The mostly gin clear water averages 3.6ft deep. The bay is full of wide open sand flats on the east side and acres of turtle grass on the west. It really is a sight to see!
You will be fishing from a 2016 Hells Bay Professional skiff. It is perfect for stalking redfish and trout with a fly rod (or spinning rod) in hand. It is super quiet and is able to float in extremely shallow water. Flounder, black drum, sheep head, snook and possible tarpon are a few of the other varieties of fish you might encounter while fishing the LLM. It is also one of the top birding destinations in the U.S. so make sure to bring a camera.
Getting here is easy. Harlingen and Brownsville are the closest airports to fly into. From any of these airports it is less than an hour drive to the LLM. South Padre Island, Arroyo City and Port Mansfield are the best places to start our day from. They all have lodging and restaurants but SPI will have the best variety, especially for families.
As for myself. I've been hunting and fishing the area since my teenage years and a flyfishing guide for a better part of ten years. About twenty years ago flyfishing became my passion. I am very involved with our local CCA chapter (Coastal Conservation Assosiation) and our local flyfishing club. The conservation of our bay system and what swims in it are very dear to me. In 2013 I became an Orvis endorsed fly fishing guide and still am today. Flyfishing has led me to fish some incredible places such as most of the Texas coast, Montana, Louisiana, Florida, the Mexican Yucatán, Cozumel and Belize. But the Lower Laguna Madre of Texas is home! Sight fishing for these fish is a total adrenaline rush so come on down and share my passion, or further your passion, for this sport with me.
Thank you for visiting my site and hope to be poling you onto a group of tailing redfish soon!
